LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Visit LEX is partnering with local nonprofit FoodChain to make sure no family goes hungry during this difficult time.

"The need was large before the pandemic began, and not surprisingly it has grown exponentially," said FoodChain Executive Director Becca Self.

The Nourish Lexington initiative launched back on April 1.

"One of the first things we realized was that it's not just about making meals, but you have to meet people where they know about and where they feel comfortable," said Self.

Nourish Lexington is working with local businesses like Keeneland and Athenian Grill to prepare thousands of meals each week. Last week alone, they handed out 6,930 meals.

People are able to drive or walk up to get food at different distribution sites, including a new one at The Red Mile which will be used Monday through Friday. You don't have to apply or qualify, and you don't have to pay a dime.

"You show up and pick it up. We aren't here to judge whether or not someone's need is high enough, I think we can all agree that everyone has pretty profound need in this unprecedented time," said Self.

Self says they're so thankful for the local restaurants who have donated to their program, but they're also relying on your help.

"We are stepping forward, not only organizations and businesses but individuals as well. And Nourish Lexington as well as FoodChain I think have been buoyed tremendously by that generosity," said Self.
