FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — April 12-18 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, who are often called the "heroes behind the headsets" or dispatchers. The dispatchers serve as a link in keeping law enforcement officers and the public safe at all times.

Kentucky State Police employs 180 telecommunicators across 16 posts. This year, dispatchers have decided to pay it forward.

KSP Post 1 dispatchers are donating their time and money to serve people working on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. Dispatchers have written "thank you" notes and are buying food to deliver to healthcare workers.

“I just thought it would be a good gesture on our behalf to actually give back to those folks, those frontline people that are sacrificing everyday,” said Post Telecommunications Supervisor, Heather Farmer. “Everyday they’re showing up knowing that they could be that next victim, that next case, and they still show up. It’s just a way of paying them back for their sacrifice.”

Post 1's staff will also celebrate this week by wearing green one day to show support for COVID-19 victims.
