LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Honks and waves were symbols of gratitude in front of UK Hospital in Lexington Friday morning.
"We just want to thank those who are saving lives every day, risking their own lives, selfless acts of kindness and love. And we just wanted to do something to acknowledge those people," explained Gooch Construction Concrete Superintendent Rick McDonald.
Early Friday morning, pick-ups, concrete mixers, other construction equipment and UK Police assembled at Kroger Field before parading down South Limestone at 10:00 a.m.
"It just turned out amazing. I don't think you've seen a person in my crowd here that didn't have a smile on your face or an arm out the window waving," said McDonald. "It was awesome. You could see people in the windows waving, and we made sure that we made a double route."
McDonald, who organized the parade with UK Police, said their hope was to give the healthcare "heroes" hope.
"It's not about any recognition. It's not about any advertisement. It's about what we could do to say thank you to those people that work 12 hours a day, seven days a week."
Gooch Construction is accepting nominations to honor a health care worker for their service to the community. That person will receive $2,000 for going above and beyond the call of duty.
"If you're in that hospital. You're in danger. And we all know that it could go from the person that's wiping everything down to, to a doctor saving a life," explained McDonald.
