LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Big Ass Fans is known for manufacturing fans and lights for industrial, commercial and residential use. Among those products, is a UV light fan that the company says helps to kill germs.

Now, businesses in the area are installing them. Bear and The Butcher is one of those businesses taking its precautions to the next level by installing fans with a UV light.

"It just pulls more air through now that usually just circulating air. With the UV lights, it's literally sterilizing the air. And the more air you can push through a fan, the more air that's being cleaned and sterilized," Glenn Cox, General Manager of Bear and The Butcher, said.

Big Ass Fans, says the system started off in hospitals to help stop the spread of other illnesses. Now, they're being used to stop the spread of COVID-19.

"UV breaks down those micro organisms. Whether it's bacteria, a virus, whatever it is that's floating in the air. Just want to break it down, so that it robs it of the things that allow it to continue to live," Alex Risen, of Big Ass Fans, said.

On top of consistent cleaning and wearing masks, Bear and The Butcher has two fans with UV lights on the first floor, along with a bigger one on the second floor.

"We want people to feel safe, we want our employees to feel safe. You know? It's scary times, just to give people that it is a safe place to come and eat, that it is a safe place to come and work. We fully believe that," Cox said.
