FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — Gov. Andy Beshear announced that a 16-year-old is suffering from an illness of COVID-19 that is being seen more and more in younger patients.

He says the 16-year-old has a similar illness to the 10-year-old who is on a ventilator, which was announced Monday, but the 16-year-old's illness isn't as serious and he is not on a ventilator.

"The kids who get sick with this can have cardiovascular collapse, supported measures to keep track of blood pressure, respiratory collapse and breathing support with a ventilator, so it's a very serious condition" said Dr. Stack.

"For these individuals who have this, this is very dangerous and life threatening. As far as we're aware, there have been no deaths from it yet but they have come very close," Stack added.

Stack also said the 10-year-old currently on a ventilator has had his medications reduced since Monday and is doing better.

There are 6,853 COVID-19 cases and 321 coronavirus-related deaths.

Tuesday's results include 191 new cases and 10 new deaths.

Editor's note: In an earlier version of this story, we incorrectly reported that the 16-year-old was on a ventilator.
