LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Customers were caught off guard at a local coffee shop today and that's not a bad thing.

A Cup of Commonwealth surprised its costumers on Monday with a free cup of coffee for what they call "Happy Break-In Day."

On Dec. 9, 2013, someone broke into the store on Eastern Avenue and stole all of the store's money. For most people, that wouldn't be something to celebrate.

But, as A Cup of Commonwealth wrote on its Facebook page, "It was a defining moment in who we are as a family."

Griffin Lamb who works at the store said they anticipated operating at a loss that day because it had no change to give costumers, so the business gave away free cups of coffee.

After explaining the situation to the first costumer, he gave them a $20 bill and told them to keep it. More generosity followed and one customer even fixed the shop's broken window.

To celebrate that kindness, every Dec. 9, the show gives away one free cup of coffee to every customer.

"This is a way to say thank you for supporting us when we really didn't deserve it because that truly got us back on our feet and sent us forward," said Lamb.

Customer Vida Vitagliano appreciated the surprise and said, "It's wonderful, it's just good to feel gratitude."

On the company's Facebook page a message that sums up the day: "Happy Break-In Day. We love you all and we are forever grateful."
