GEORGETOWN, Ky. (LEX 18) — There is a lot of uncertainty right now and local food banks are bracing for record requests for help. The Amen House in Scott County anticipates more families will need meal assistance like never before as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.
Amen House Executive Director Michele Carlisle says they've dealt with Toyota shutdowns and other job hardships in the past, but nothing like what she expects to happen over the next week or so.
"For that plant to shut down for even just a little bit, the next month we'll see people going, 'Man, I missed a week's worth of pay and now I need to lean on you guys.' We know this is going to be much longer than a week's worth of pay," Carlisle said.
Carlisle says they also anticipate more deliveries due to homebound seniors or additional people quarantined due to COVID 19.
"I think we could go from 12 to hundreds," Carlisle said.
She credits her volunteers who work ten at a time to prepare and pack food. Until further notice, only volunteers can enter the building. They bring food out to people's cars and drop off deliveries at front porches.
Carlisle says the best way to donate is to send a monetary donation. She says their strongest food supply is their food purchasing coop with God's Pantry Food Bank.
