LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Veterans from across Kentucky gathered Wednesday at Jacobson Park for a chance to build on the relationships they’ve made through the Vet Center.

The Vet Center offers readjustment services for all veterans in Kentucky, according to Lee Ellis, a readjustment counselor with the Vet Center.

“We offer fantastic counseling but it is the support of fellow veterans who understand that makes a big difference for these gentlemen,” she said.

Vietnam veteran Bobby Brady said he hadn’t heard of the Vet Center until three years ago.

“It helps when you get together to talk to somebody and hear their stories, and compare where they were and where I was, and you can’t get that anywhere else,” Brady said.

The Vet Center also has a mobile unit that travels to 86 counties in Kentucky, Ellis said.

“I think it eliminates a barrier for veterans,” she said. “Sometimes there are transportation issues or physical challenges.”

Brady wishes he knew about the Vet Center earlier, but he hopes he can encourage other veterans to give it a try.

“I promise all the vets they’ll be happy they did,” he said.
