TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHR) – A Terre Haute couple is facing charges for injuries allegedly inflicted upon a 3-year-old boy.

According to our partners at the Tribune-Star, police arrested 33-year-old Scott A. Edwards and his 28-year-old girlfriend Holly Cota after Cota’s son was hospitalized with multiple injuries.

Police say Cota took her son to Union Hospital with injuries to his head and abdomen. Upon examination, it was discovered the boy’s tongue was split in the middle and the top of his tongue was missing.

According to court documents cited by WTWO-TV, a doctor with the Child Protection Team at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health noted the cut “appeared clean,” which led her to believe scissors or a similar tool cut the child.

Cota first told police her son was injured when he fell out of bed, but later said the injuries happened while Edwards was watching the boy while she was at work.

Edwards is facing charges of aggravated battery, battery and neglect of a dependent, all felonies, while Cota is facing a charge of obstruction of justice. Police said she lied to them when questioned about her son’s injuries.
