LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — One moment of careless behavior cost a man his car. He had no idea he was being watched when he left the ignition running at a public location.

Lexington police say there’s an easy solution to prevent cold weather car thefts, but it keeps happening.

“As the victim is walking out of this Speedway Station, the suspects are driving away in his car,” Detective Mark Thomas tells LEX 18.

The man left the car running as he walked into the store and it didn’t take a couple of criminal masterminds to pull it off either.

“Roughly 24-hours after stealing that vehicle, the car and the persons of interest were spotted at this Valero gas station, but they were able to get away on foot,” said Thomas.

Lexington police want you to keep in mind that a car can provide more opportunities to rob you.

“They will, sometimes, look in the glove box, find the registration receipts with the home addresses and they could, in turn, take that to the house and now you’ve got a stolen car and residential burglary,” said Thomas.

He also wants to remind you that having a warm car is not worth the risk of it being stolen.
