CLINTON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – A military hero was honored in Clinton County on Saturday 20 years after his death.

President Trump recently awarded First Lieutenant Garlin Conner the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions that saved lives during World War II.

Friends and family gathered in Conner’s hometown to celebrate him and reflect on his legacy.

His widow Pauline says her husband would’ve thought it was all too much.

“He never would discuss it with me and he didn’t discuss it that much with [our son] Paul either,” said Pauline.

She says she and her son had no idea about her husband’s acts of bravery until after he died.

“He was so humble that his deeds were almost lost to history,” said Pauline.

She says it took the work of many for her husband to get the recognition he deserves.

“I’m sure if he was here he would’ve looked over that group and he would’ve said well children who would’ve thought it,” said Pauline.

But she’s incredibly thankful for it all.
