(LEX 18) – Halloween costume maker Yandy has issued a statement over a Handmaid Tale inspired costume that Twitter deemed just a little too sexy given the content matter.
The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian story about women in forced sexual servitude. So when the company created a “Yandy Brave Red Maiden” costume that showed some skin, the internet reacted.
“It has become obvious that our (costume) is being seen as a symbol of women’s oppression, rather than an expression of women’s empowerment,” the statement reads in part.
The costume has since been pulled from the website.
