Louisville Group Wants Color Eliminated From Government Forms

Posted

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18)– A group in Louisville spent their Independence Day collecting signatures to eliminate checking a color on government forms.

The Descendants of American Slaves (DASI) hopes new legislation will do just that.

They spent most of the day asking people to sign their petition.

As part of their effort, DASI wants the term "African American" to be reclassified and recognized for the country a person represents instead.

"African-American is an immigrant that comes from Africa and makes their residence here in America," said Johnny Lee, a member of DASI. "We’re descendants of American slaves. We’re the backbone of America."

The new legislation would be called "The Human Rights American Slaves Reclassification Bill."

The group plans to meet with two state representatives next week.
