WEST CHESTER, Ohio (WLWT) – Matt Stratman, a 15-year-old Lakota West student who collapsed during a lacrosse game, has died.
WLWT reports teen had been in a coma since June 9, when he collapsed during a lacrosse game. He had a stroke due to bleeding in the brain.
Friends said that at first, his family thought he had heatstroke, but it turned out to be a much bigger issue.
Support for No. 27 quickly spread across social media.
"It’s a family. I really think it’s a Firebird family. You come here and you’re part of a special group, and we’re going to take care of everyone," said Lakota West football player Isaac Kolosik. "He’s a great kid. I love him. He’s always fun to be around and (we are) just really praying for him."
Even competing teams started tweeting #stratmanstrong.
"It shows how the community has already bought in to helping Matt and his family out," said Lakota West football captain Ladonnis Griffin.
There will be a vigil at the high school football stadium for Matt at 8:00 p.m. Saturday.
