WASHINGTON (LEX 18)– The Senate has passed its version of the Farm Bill, which includes a provision championed by Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell to fully legalize industrial hemp.
Under the bill, hemp would be removed from the federal list of controlled substances.
The bill also gives states the power to regulate production, and allows researchers to apply for federal grants.
Kentucky has become a leader in hemp production since taking part in a pilot program testing the legalization of industrial hemp production.
Last year alone, the state recorded $16 million in profit from hemp production.
