(Drive Mode) – Among the 32 states that prohibit driving above 70 miles per hour, Kentucky drivers log the most 70mph+ drive time, potentially putting them in legal jeopardy and contributing to traffic hazards on the state’s roads.
A study from Drive Mode ranks all 50 states by the percent of time drivers exceed 70mph, a speed threshold many experts deem dangerous.
Nationwide, about 13% of all drive time tops 70mph. In Kentucky, it’s about 16%.

#2 South Dakota: 17.07% (max limit 80 mph)
#3 New Mexico: 16.50% (max limit 75 mph)

Overall, the data shows the percentage of time driving above 70 mph increases as the state maximum speed limit increases; however, there are notable exceptions to this trend which confirms that driving behavior is informed by more than posted speed limits alone.
