(LEX 18) — The new year already is looking good for drivers. The smartphone app Gas Buddy predicts that this year, Americans will pay a little less for gas than in 2019.

According to the app, gas prices are expected to be 2 cents lower than last year, at an average of $2.60 per gallon.

Gas Buddy predicts that prices will be lowest in February, but will see increases from that point on. Gas prices are expected to be a peak in May, potentially rising as much as 75 cents from their low. Prices also tend to rise again in the summertime.

Larger cities like Atlanta, Chicago and New York City could see the average price hit $3 per gallon, while other cities like San Francisco and Seattle could see them hit $4 per gallon.

In Kentucky, the average price is currently about $2.50.

Also, experts at Gas Buddy say the price variation between stations and states could hit record levels this year, so if you don't do your research before you get on the road, you could end up spending a lot more.
