A new TV revival will hopefully bring the beloved series “The Powerpuff Girls” back to our screens — this time as a live-action show featuring the girls as 20-something women.
The animated superhero series followed the young sisters, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, who were created when Professor Utonium accidentally mixed together sugar, spice and everything nice with the mysterious Chemical X.
The series was created by Craig McCracken for Cartoon Network and ran from 1998 to 2005 — meaning there’s now an entire generation of young adults with fond memories of the super-powered sisters.
McCracken tapped into the nostalgia for these powerful girls on International Women’s Day this year when he tweeted a still from the animated show.

The vibe of the new “Powerpuff Girls” show would be different from that of the cartoon series. For starters, the girls have aged along with their audience.
“The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes,” the show description reads, according to Variety. “Now they’re disillusioned 20-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?”
The new version of the television show would also be live-action, leading to much speculation over who will play Blossom (the self-proclaimed leader of the pack), Bubbles (the cute one) and Buttercup (the tough one).
The show is “in development” at CW, which means it’s not a done deal. But with the writing/production dream team of Diablo Cody (“Juno,” “Tully”) and Heather Regnier (“Veronica Mars,” “iZombie”) on board, things are looking good.
This isn’t the first time the sisters from “The Powerpuff Girls” have been brought back — a movie adaptation was released in 2002, and a rebooted version of the TV series aired from 2016 to 2019.
As soon as the news broke on Twitter, fans had plenty of suggestions for who could play these powerful ladies.
Could Kathryn Newton (best known for playing Louise Brooks in the CBS comedy series “Gary Unmarried,” Abigail Carlson in the HBO mystery drama series “Big Little Lies,” and Allie Pressman in the Netflix teen drama series “The Society”) make a good Bubbles?

What about Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom in “Riverdale”) as Blossom and Elizabeth Gillies (Fallon Carrington in “Dynasty”) as Buttercup?
