HERRINGTON LAKE, Ky (LEX 18) — Labor Day weekend is a great time for people to get together, have a cook out, swim in a lake, but to have fun, you need to stay safe.
Tommy Jones, whose family owns Kamp Kennedy Marina on Herrington Lake, said that on Friday morning, he checked the docks and made sure everything was ready for one of their busiest weekends of the year.
"We love it here man. Because we got good people on this lake," Jones told LEX 18's Conroy Delouche.
Kahl Helbert and his family arrived at their houseboat on Friday. Helbert said he hits the lake every chance he gets, but not before making sure he has all of his safety gear.
"I've got my life jackets on the boat that I need to have. Especially if you have kids on, you have the right life jackets for the kids that are Coast Guard approved for flotation devices," said Helbert.
Helbert is also a firefighter and a paramedic, so if someone gets hurt, he steps in to help.
"I've found myself several times on this dock. Several times. People falling, getting cut, getting hurt," he said.
Helbert told LEX 18 that one problem he sees on Labor Day weekend is people drinking and driving, that's why law enforcement plans to step up patrols on the water this weekend.
