When “Dead to Me” debuted on Netflix last year, the dark comedy instantly became a cult favorite. Jen and Judy, portrayed by Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, star as two widows who bond over their shared trauma in a grief-support group.
Since season 2 aired in May, fans have been wondering if there would be a season 3, especially as the last episode ended on a cliff-hanger. The good news is that Netflix has confirmed that “Dead to Me” has been renewed for one final season.
Created by Liz Feldman and co-produced by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Jessica Elbaum, the program earned Applegate an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and has received critical acclaim for its sharp wit and touching portrayal of female friendships.
In February, Feldman (who earned two Daytime Emmy awards for her comedy work on “Ellen”) received a Best Episodic Comedy award from the Writers Guild of America for her “Dead to Me” pilot.
“From start to finish, ‘Dead To Me’ is exactly the show I wanted to make. And it’s been an incredible gift,” showrunner Liz Feldman said in a statement, according to Deadline. “I am beyond grateful to Netflix for supporting ‘Dead To Me’ from day one, and I’m thrilled to continue our collaboration.”
In addition to creating one last season of “Dead to Me,” Feldman’s deal with Netflix also includes future, as-yet-unknown projects. The multi-year agreement will give Feldman the chance to provide even more of her comedic talent and unique voice to Netflix viewers. It will no doubt be a lucrative partnership for both parties: Last year, Netflix revealed that a staggering 30 million subscribers tuned in for “Dead to Me,” making it one of the most popular original series on the streaming service.
If you’re wondering what Feldman has up her sleeve for Jen and Judy in season 3, you’re not alone. But don’t bother trying to guess, says star Cardellini.
“I always say, whatever I can think of, Liz [Feldman] always comes up with something a million times better, and the writers,” Cardellini told Gold Derby. “You think you know where they’re going and they take another turn and you didn’t see it coming. I’m excited to find out.”
