LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– The Lexington Spurs, a local chapter for the Tottenham Football Club, is turning their passion for the sport into a way to give back.

The motto of the Tottenham Spurs Football Club from London, England is “to dare is to do.”

Their local support chapter here in Lexington is taking that to heart. For the past three years, the Lexington Spurs have gathered at Shamrock’s on Patchen Drive to cheer on their team. As they’ve grown, they’ve decided to give back. This season, they’re holding a food drive with a rival club.

“We ended up raising 300 pounds of food, which kind of blew all of our minds,” said Lexington Spurs co-chairman Matt Gordon.

When they contacted God’s Pantry to make the donation, the food bank didn’t quite know who they were.

“Some of the folks at the drop-off center saw the Lexington Spurs part and thought perhaps we were rodeo cowboys,” said Gordon.

Their donations made it to the shelves of about 200 homes in a matter of days.

“How cool is it that an organization here in Lexington, that has an international affiliation, cares about hunger and wants to make a difference for people in the Lexington community?” Mike Halligan, the CEO of God’s Pantry said.

Now, as a part of a contest among other support groups, their good deed is getting the attention of the very team they cheer for, and if chosen by the team, they could get honored at the final match of the season.

“Either way, it’s very cool to be on that list, and know that those guys are actually watching something we did here,” said Gordon.

There is also an Annual Letter Carrier Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger coming up on Saturday. If you would like to participate, just place a box of canned or non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier arrives this Saturday and they will do the rest.
