LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Socks are an essential item for people experiencing homelessness, but they’re not something most people think about every day.

This business is now working to make sure every person in need has their feet covered, and it’s bringing its mission to Lexington.

Sky Footwear was started by Keaton Hendricks in 2016 out of his dorm room at Taylor University north of Indianapolis. Two and a half years later, they’ve donated 26,000 pairs nationwide.

“So for each pair of socks we sell, we donate and we partner with a different homeless shelter each month,” he said. “When we can provide these socks and resources to shelters, and they don’t have to worry about these types of things, then they’re able to care for people and love people a little easier.”

This month Sky Footwear is partnering with Lexington Rescue Mission with the goal of donating 1,000 pairs of socks.

“For us, it’s a huge blessing,” said Kim Livesay with the Lexington Rescue Mission.

Livesay told LEX 18 that about 300 to 400 people come through their doors every month either homeless or in poverty, and most of them need socks.

“When you walk that much you go through socks quickly, so socks turnover here like crazy everybody wants socks,” she said.

You can donate by purchasing socks for yourself, or you can opt to purchase donations only. Sky Footwear is also looking for a corporate sponsor in the area who will help match donations to Lexington Rescue Mission.
