LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Lexington activist Devine Carama again will brave the cold to continue his mission to make sure no child in Central and Eastern Kentucky spends the winter without a coat.

Last November, he stood outside in bitter temperatures rapping downtown to raise money, coats and awareness for the cause. He even suffered from frostbite.

“I just want to uplift people with dope bars, and you can be a superstar, but I’m a soul star,” he rapped.

This year, Carama is taking a new approach.

On Sunday, the activist will embark on a round-trip walk from Lexington to Morehead, once again braving the elements. He will leave from Total Grace Church on North Limestone around 1 p.m. on Sunday.

“I’ll be taking some back routes and through the towns,” he told LEX 18.

He’s calling it the Walk for Warmth, and it is to raise awareness for his charity’s annual coat drive. The drive is in its fifth year and it is his largest yet as he continues to meet the needs of children across all of Central and Eastern Kentucky.

“We went from 50 coats to 100, to 500, to 1,500 to 3,000,” he said.

Right now, his donation space at the Plantory on West 6th Street is in good shape, but he needs about triple to meet their goal. He’s looking to leaders and fellow activists of the past for inspiration, and he is putting his feet to the pavement, using personal sacrifice to encourage others to give.

Carama admits that he’s nervous about his trip and he has his concerns, especially given the weather outlook for the weekend. He says that he does this with kids across Kentucky in mind and a cause that is bigger than himself.

“That’s what it’s about, I think it will inspire me more with it being cold this weekend and making that sacrifice,” said Carama.

They are still in need of about 2,000 coats with a deadline of Dec. 12.
